About

European gardens; a layering of botanical texture, transparency, light and a sprinkle of French music are inspirations for Verde Cosi.

Suzanne Luby Ahrens, founder of Verde Cosi, is a diverse designer and artist who savors life in her garden while creating fine art and textile designs. It is this simple aesthetic that is subtly present in all of Suzanne’s art, photography, print making and fabric design. She has designed fabric collections, handmade textile home and fashion wares, paper goods, fine floral lifestyle photography, watercolor portraits, and city landscapes as a juried and licensed artist. Customers immediately feel at ease in the fresh botanical environments Suzanne creates with Verde Cosi artisan wares.

Suzanne’s vision is to transport people with Verde Cosi brand wares to a European garden with lots of cappuccino and a view of the ocean.

“It is my education in Italy and the U.S.A; childhood by the ocean; trips to Europe and my experience as a mother, sewer, and gardener that continue to surround the excitement in my work.”

My Process

to create a Verde Cosi product and works of art.

My work is a reflection of the beauty of life and nature and the respect and grateful feelings I have for the environment and community.

Starting with my favorite pencils on large sheets of paper from marker drawings in my sketchbooks – each design starts out this way, small, and the vision I have is a gradual slow process, building more drawings – flowers, botanical berries, leaves, birds, faces, architecture.
I move on to ink, loosening my reigns on the realistic and graduating to the gestural. The mediums I work in are varied, this keeps my interest high as I always feel I am changing and growing and trying new things. From pencil and ink botanical drawings, to watercolor with big brushes to shapes drawn in the computer. To repeats for final fabric – all of it is well thought and loved along the way. Textured French watercolor paper, rough hewn linen – these are surfaces I print on. Prints of fine art are done in my studio on archival museum quality papers. Stationery is printed on cotton papers here in the United States. Fabric is printed in small batches, silk screened by hand in my studio in Massachusetts or sent to be printed in small batches on the East Coast. All with the environment in mind, nothing wasted. The result is variable and unique and sewn by myself or with the help of sewers in my community. Each step designed, and crafted by hand, each cut of fabric framed by a pillow sized as a work of art. Each scarf edge sewn with mitered corners. Each hand bag lined with linen and useful pockets and zippers and snaps. Each apron designed for a real gardener looking to wear a piece as beautiful as their gardens and themselves.

Each painting capturing the moment of wonder that I feel for the beauty this world possesses, reminding you to take a moment and enjoy slow living, slow design, hand made products from my home to yours.

With kind wishes,

Suzanne Luby Ahrens,
owner, Verde Cosi
